The General Affairs and Personnel Department aims to:

A thoughtful behind-the-scenes supporter.

General Affairs and Personnel

Deputy Director of the Administration Department and Director of the General Affairs and Personnel Department

Yuuta Ito

Before joining the company, Ito worked at three different companies and joined the General Affairs and Human Resources Department in February 3. We asked him to talk about the work involved in General Affairs and Human Resources at Coremix and what makes the company appealing, including comparisons with other companies.

Why I wanted to become a core mixer

Before joining Coremix, I had worked for three companies, including on secondment. After working in sales for a furniture manufacturer and its parent company for four years, I worked in general affairs and human resources for a watch manufacturer for about 3 years. As I approached the milestone of my 4th year in the workforce, I asked myself what kind of work I wanted to continue doing and what kind of environment I wanted to work in. At that time, I decided that I wanted to continue working in general affairs and human resources, where I could make use of my experience. I wanted to work in a fun environment. With this in mind, I began looking for a new workplace, with the entertainment industry in mind as well.

After about a year, I received a call from a recruitment agency and learned that Coremix was looking for someone to work in general affairs and human resources. After doing some research, I found out that in addition to publishing manga, they also ran an all-female theater company and a restaurant (at the time). This completely changed my image of what a publishing company was, and I thought this might be the environment I was looking for, so I applied. By chance, I received an offer at the end of September 1. I started working there in February 2021.

One week after I joined the company, my boss told me, "I want you to review the work and division of roles in the General Affairs and Personnel Department." It was difficult because I didn't know what to do at the time, but through this I was able to understand the overall picture of the work of the General Affairs and Personnel Department at Coremix. Furthermore, I was able to learn about the efforts of each business division that work together, which was a great help in thinking about what we, as the administrative department, should do.

When I joined the company, I was surprised to find that there was no separate office for the General Affairs and Human Resources Department. In my previous job, the General Affairs and Human Resources Department had a separate office because there were a lot of confidential documents. I was initially confused by the change in environment, but I soon began to understand the benefits of not being spatially separated from other departments. I could see each employee's face, what they were doing, who got along with whom, and their physical and mental health from their appearance, and I could naturally get a sense of how the employees were doing.
Another important role of the general affairs and human resources department is to be a "considerate behind-the-scenes supporter" for employees. I think the lack of partitions creates an atmosphere where employees can feel free to ask for advice by asking "Can I talk for a moment?"

Jobs in the General Affairs and Human Resources Department at Coremix

As mentioned above, the job of the General Affairs and Human Resources Department at Coremix is to support each department as a "considerate behind-the-scenes supporter" for employees. We want employees to focus on their work in their respective departments, so we hope that the General Affairs and Human Resources Department will share and accompany any tasks that are not part of the department's original duties. Therefore, in addition to carrying out regular work, we also talk to each department and are talked to by each department, thinking about what we can do to help and taking action every day. For example, if the manga editorial department plans to hold a social gathering inviting artists, we will hold a meeting and share the tasks that we can take on, such as arranging the venue and gifts.

Another important part of our job is to create an environment where employees can work comfortably. The General Affairs and Human Resources Department handles everything from big things like reviewing labor regulations and attendance systems, and reconsidering office space and equipment, to small things like checking and replenishing supplies.

Also, the general affairs department is where employees come to ask for advice. With that in mind, I think it's better for both men and women to be in the general affairs department, and it's better for employees if there are as many members as possible. I think there are some people who think, "I can't tell Mr. Ito, but I could tell someone else." Also, there are probably some things that can only be discussed between men or women.
With this mindset, we basically come to the office to do our work. However, we also have flexible working hours, such as teleworking and flextime. Female employees who are raising children also use this system to work in the General Affairs and Human Resources Department, so I think it's an environment where you can balance work and childcare.

The main HR job is recruiting new graduates and mid-career hires. We are probably the only company in the industry that recruits new graduates for manga editing positions. I would like to promote this more and focus on recruiting the right people. In order to reduce mismatches, we have started work experience programs for graduates in 2024 with the full cooperation of the editorial department. There are even cases where participants have taken the employment exam. We found that work experience programs, which allow time for employees to get to know Coremix's manga editing jobs, are effective in recruiting new graduates.

Mid-career recruitment is generally carried out when a vacancy occurs. Until now, we only requested external recruitment agencies, but from last year, we started recruiting through our own media. Because Coremix is a publishing company, our branding department has the skills to conduct interviews, write manuscripts, and take photographs. Therefore, we had the recruiting department write interview articles for employees, and worked with the digital promotion department to promote them on social media. As a result, we have seen cases where this has led to the hiring of full-time employees in the legal department. As I will explain later, I believe that this was possible thanks to the open atmosphere within Coremix, which allowed us to work together quickly and achieve this.

Finally, one more point: it is also the job of general affairs and HR to gather information with an eye toward future changes, envision a better image for the company, and work on designing the work environment and systems and revising regulations.

Advantages of Coremix

One of Coremix's features that I learned after joining the company is how open the company is. The different departments are close to each other, and there are no barriers between them. This creates an environment where people can cooperate across departments. I think this is a major strength. The reason behind this is that information is frequently shared in group chats that all employees participate in. Everyone can see which titles are selling well at the moment, what events are planned, and when the company will be featured in which media. I feel that the fact that information is available to everyone in real time, not just to related departments, creates an environment where employees can easily work together.

Another good thing about Coremix is that we start work at 10am and finish at 18pm, which is one hour shorter than most other companies. This is because our president, Nobuhiko Horie, wants employees to spend time researching to generate new ideas and going out to see things to get hints. He also wants employees to value communication between employees, so he wants them to spend seven hours at the office discussing and inspiring each other. I think it's great that the president understands the weaknesses of being a latecomer in the publishing industry, which is dominated by long-established companies, and that he takes working hours into consideration so that each employee can make an effort to aim higher from there.

Another advantage is that they are quick to respond to changes in the world. For example, when the coronavirus became a global pandemic, they quickly introduced and institutionalized teleworking. Another advantage, although it may seem like a small thing, is that they have a free drink server. When I see employees meeting each other in front of it and chatting, I feel that it is a good opportunity for communication.

Issues facing the General Affairs and Personnel Department

The challenge is sharing the knowledge we have gained so far. There are currently four people in the General Affairs and Personnel Department, and none of them have a long history with the company. Since not everyone has necessarily experienced and knows about past events, we often tell them to research and share previous cases whenever an event occurs.

Another issue is the ability to adapt to the rapidity of change. Coremix is a company that is fast when it comes to starting new things. As with the aforementioned move towards introducing teleworking, the ability to adapt to change is required. Speaking of adapting to change, laws and rules related to general affairs and human resources change quickly, almost every year. It is necessary to constantly update your knowledge so as not to be held back by the knowledge you once learned.

I want to be able to convey to the members of my department the fun and rigor of the job. To that end, I make them learn the necessary knowledge to do so, and I make them take mundane but essential steps, such as getting confirmation from a social insurance labor consultant so that they can be responsible for what they say to employees.

The Charm of Kichijoji

What I learned from working in Kichijoji is that the best of central Tokyo and the suburbs coexist here. While there are a variety of restaurants like in the city center, there is also the vast and lush Inokashira Park. During lunch and breaks, employees, including myself, often visit the park to take a walk and refresh our minds. I think that the fact that Inokashira Park is located just a minute's walk from the head office plays an important role in maintaining the mental and physical health of employees.
