After graduating from law school, Uchida joined Coremix's legal department.Uchida, who loves manga and wanted to work in a field related to copyright, now, three years after joining the company, finds the legal work at the publishing company Coremix so rewarding and interesting.
Why I wanted to become a core mixer
I joined Coremix's legal department as a new graduate after graduating from law school.I originally studied law because of my interest in copyright.I've loved drawing since I was a teenager, and posted my drawings on posting sites such as pixiv. However, one day I came across information regarding the protection of copyrighted works and wondered, ``Could something I drew violate copyright?''It was also the time to choose a career path, so I decided to study copyright at university.I eventually entered the Faculty of Law, and after graduating, I studied at a law school for two years.
After that, I started looking for a job in an environment where I could mainly deal with copyrights. However, as I knew to some extent, the legal fields handled differ from company to company, and there were not many workplaces where I could work on copyright, which I wanted.
However, while searching, I learned that the publishing company Coremix was recruiting for a legal position. When I researched Core Mix, I found out that they handle famous works such as ``Walkure of the End'', ``City Hunter'', and ``Fist of the North Star''.
I became interested and read an interview article with the company president and an explanation of the business on their website, and learned that they had set up a base in Kumamoto and were focusing on developing manga artists in earnest. No one was working on Core Mix yet. I imagine that this is a company culture where people are willing to take on challenges that are not available to them.I was intrigued, decided to take the employment exam, and applied.
Company atmosphere, charm of Kichijoji
Core Mix has a vibrant company, and I like that atmosphere. The floor I'm on is very lively.Since various departments are on the same floor, many discussions take place lively and on a daily basis.
In addition, there are club activities within the company, and I am a member of the baseball club. It's an opportunity to interact with members of other departments, so I feel that communication here also facilitates smoother work-related interactions.
I am also happy that the company is located in Kichijoji.I like that it's quiet because there aren't the crowds like in the city center. There are many delicious restaurants, and going out for lunch is one of the things I look forward to.Inokashira Park is a one-minute walk from the office, so I sometimes take a walk during my breaks to refresh my mood.
And the feature of Core Mix that I like the most is that the working hours are 1 hours a day instead of 8 hours. In my case, I'm the type of person who gets better results when I focus on short periods of time, so I feel this suits me.Also, it's easier to make plans after work.I also value my private time.Overtime is about 7 hours a month.
We also have flextime and telework systems, which are also utilized by people in the same management department.I personally don't use it much because it's close to where I live, but it has been helpful when I have to run errands with my family or when I'm not feeling well.
Coremix legal work
Currently, my main job is to create contracts for the start of new manga series and the creation of videos and products derived from manga. In order for a good plan or project to become a work or product, a contract is necessary. We, the legal staff, are involved in this process and feel happy and fulfilled when we can help create works and products.
To put it another way, my current job is to support works, artists, and even core mixes so that they do not suffer any disadvantages or risks. We play a role in preventing legal troubles by preparing contracts that match the company's situation and wishes and negotiating with parties through business departments.
Additionally, the number of contracts has been on the rise recently. In addition to contracts with manga artists, which are commonly associated with manga artists, licensing contracts and contracts related to publishing account for a large proportion of the contracts. In addition, the number of translation and publication projects overseas is increasing, and I am sometimes in charge of English contracts. Now, in my third year with the company, the range of work I am responsible for is gradually increasing.I'm glad that I can realize my personal growth through these experiences.
Legal knowledge is important for the legal department. However, in addition to that, you will also be required to be able to communicate smoothly within the company. There is a great deal of internal communication involved in drafting contracts, and it is necessary to collaborate and share information with various departments. In this regard, I would like to grow together with my future colleagues in the Legal Department, who are newly recruiting.
