After graduating from university, Mr. T worked in civil litigation at a court and case law research at a law firm before joining Coremix. We asked him to tell us about the content and characteristics of his legal work at Coremix.
Why I wanted to become a core mixer
There were two reasons, the first being manga. I love manga and have been a fan of Core Mix's works for a long time. I was particularly impressed by "Unsung Cinderella: Hospital Pharmacist Aoi Midori" and "The 2th Medical Record: Tokushige Akira's Medical Interview." Reading these two medical works, I felt the accumulation of meticulous research and the sincerity and passion of the creators. Core Mix doesn't just prioritize sales. I thought it was a publisher that creates conscientious and serious works.
Another trigger was studying copyright. I love manga, and I wanted to work in this industry, protecting and supporting content. In preparation for that, I studied reproduction rights and the use of copyrighted works on the web. As a result, I had just passed the Business Copyright Examination (the only qualification exam in Japan that specializes in copyright). It was around that time that I found out that Coremix was recruiting for a legal position. I applied, hoping to be able to support the legal aspects of Coremix's works, which I love, and was fortunate enough to join the company in September 1.
Coremix legal work
My current main duties are reviewing and drafting contracts, responding to legal inquiries from employees, and compliance-related matters such as protecting personal information. Overall, 6% of my work is contract-related. When it comes to reviewing contracts, there are cases where there are past precedents that can be used as reference, but there are also many cases where I am faced with completely unprecedented cases. Coremix is a company with a strong spirit of challenge, tackling new things. As a result, there are times when I am required to think from scratch. In such cases, I think that people who enjoy this and are enthusiastic about working are well suited to Coremix and the Legal Affairs Department.
In terms of the daily work flow, work starts at 10:18 and the morning is spent focusing on reviewing and creating contracts. After a lunch break, in the afternoon I often have meetings with the business department and respond to legal consultations. Work ends around 5:XNUMX. There is almost no overtime, and no work on holidays. This department makes it easy to take paid leave and the five days of summer vacation granted each year.
Workplace atmosphere
From the perspective of a legal officer, I think the workplace atmosphere at Coremix is excellent. This is because the relationship between the business division and the legal department is excellent. I am deeply grateful to the senior employees who have cultivated this as the company's culture. It is precisely because of this culture that the business division and the legal department are able to exchange opinions, discuss and decide on the content of contracts on an equal footing. The relationship between the business division and the legal department varies greatly depending on the organization. For legal officers, this leads to ease of work and a sense of fulfillment, so I would like to particularly talk about Coremix's culture to those taking the recruitment exam.
Also, while it's not about the atmosphere at work, one good thing about Coremix's legal department is that they strive to prevent work from becoming too personal. However, this is not always the case, and we believe that we need to continue to work on this in the future. However, to avoid situations where we say, "The person in charge isn't here, so we don't know about that matter," we work as an organization, constantly sharing information about each case and the knowledge each person has gained. Furthermore, we are working to digitize contracts that were previously signed on paper, and to introduce and utilize a system for managing deadlines.
I learned this when I joined the company and thought it was wonderful. Dependence on individuals, which leads to "reinventing the wheel" - researching and revisiting problems that have already been considered in the past - is a problem that is also seen as a problem in the legal industry, but Coremix's conscious efforts to solve this problem are what makes it so great. In the future, I would like to continue creating manuals to share knowledge and methods, with an eye toward new legal colleagues.
Finally, speaking of the atmosphere in the workplace, not just in the Legal Affairs Department but overall, there are many employees who love entertainment. When I talk about manga, anime, and movies, there are people who understand their value. I feel happy to be able to work in such an environment.

Legal work requires not only the ability to think things through calmly from the perspective of legal compliance, but also the willingness to work alongside the business divisions. Rather than simply saying, "That's not legally acceptable," it's important to be sympathetic to the feelings and positions of the business divisions, and to be prepared to think and support them together. I believe that people with a "cool mind and a warm heart" are truly suited to working in legal affairs at Coremix. It's also important to have respect for colleagues, manga artists, readers, and business partners. We would be delighted to have someone with this kind of mindset join our legal department.
The Legal Department also makes use of AI. There are two that we use frequently, one of which is Claude. Claude is highly useful because it generates information with a high degree of accuracy compared to other generative AI. We mostly use it to draft clauses to be included in contracts and for preliminary research when receiving legal advice. However, because generative AI can sometimes provide information that is inaccurate, we always make sure to check the legal provisions and grounds that appear in the documents it creates. In that respect, my habit of meticulously researching legal grounds, including precedents, from my previous job at a law firm remains useful to me today.
Another AI we use is the paid version of DeepL, which we use to translate contracts written in foreign languages.
The appeal of Kichijoji and employee benefits
For me, there are two advantages to having the company in Kichijoji. The first is that I no longer have to exhaust myself on crowded trains. In my case, having my home and work close to each other means I can start work without exhausting myself mentally or physically. I feel like I can concentrate on my work more than before. The second advantage is that it's a town where you can have fun after work. As someone who also loves movies, I'm happy that my workplace is in a town with large movie theaters such as Uplink Kichijoji and Kichijoji Odeon.
In terms of employee benefits, I'm happy that all employees can read our company's manga app "Manga Hotto" for free. As a manga fan, I'm grateful for this, and I think our new recruits also like manga, so I wanted to let them know about it.
