Some of the editor's skills are cultivated in the field of manga making, right?
Horie:
There are many things that I can understand from exchanging names with new writers, which is more practical and there are also encounters.No matter how hard the editor works, he may not be able to beat one genius-talented writer.By making manga while suffering with a talented writer, you can hone your editing skills.Therefore, it is also a time when we are accepting a lot of new artists and expecting to meet them.
The writer and the editor grow up with each other.
Horie:
By doing so, the writer will not end up in a one-hit wonder.If you work with a well-skilled editor, it's no longer a coincidence.We may be more of a "farming" publisher.Sow the seeds, take the time to grow them, and when they're done, sow the seeds for next year ...

Horie:
Not limited to manga, I think that things will somehow become a business with 85 points. It doesn't have to be 100 points.But 70 points is tough.And most manga artists can draw about 70 points from the beginning.How to fill in the remaining 15 points is the ability of the editor, and I think it is the best part to do my best.Of course, some people have exceeded 85 points from the beginning.But that's just lucky.To such a writer, "Thank you. Teacher, please do your best!" (Laughs). For writers who want to raise the score to 85, we have a lot of know-how to train editors and manga artists, and we are working to create works that sell in order to sell.

It's not something that happens by chance or by intuition.
Horie:
To that end, we are also actively researching and analyzing hit works.For example, there is an analysis method that we call "pitch".This involves cutting the scene of the work into strips, pasting them all over the wall, and reconstructing them.Editors and MANGAKA will be able to make good things by repeating this many times, and even when newcomers are worried, if you apply "pitch" to the work you have drawn, you can immediately see the weaknesses. increase.
You do that kind of training on a daily basis.
Horie:
If you remember these methods, you will be able to have rational discussions when creating works with overseas artists. Beyond the level of "implicit understanding that only Japanese people can understand", you will be able to explain properly in words.It is important to polish the editor's words in that way.

As an editor, President Horie himself has produced many works with leading Japanese manga artists such as Tsukasa Hojo and Tetsuo Hara.Do you remember the new era of Professor Hojo and Professor Hara?
Horie:
I remember it well.What was amazing about Dr. Hara was that he could "draw a picture that hits a person in a painful way."It was really amazing in this regard. I remember saying, "This manga really hurts."
The newcomer award work that Professor Hojo sent first already had the line that "I'm sure I'll be very good at it."Also, there was a feature that "the picture looks big".His work has a lot of frames, so the picture should be small, but the person looks very big. It is "Hojo Magic".
Even the teacher who later made a big hit did not get 100 points from the beginning.
Horie:
of course.Rather than that, is there any place that excels in the production by frame division?That's what's important.It doesn't matter if you're not good at drawing.I think that if you select from that point of view, you can create a lot of talent.
The editor's skill is important to identify that.
Horie:
Even if there is a child who has been studying manga since he was little because he wanted to become a manga artist, it would be a pity if he didn't have the ability to see his talent. When I started "Monthly Comic Zenon", I had a strong desire to train newcomers from that perspective, so I started a newcomer award called "Manga Audition", which judges only with no dialogue and performance output.
"Silent Manga Audition" means that the idea has spread overseas.
Horie:
The method of evaluating the production rather than the unity of the entire work was popular, so I decided to try it overseas this time.It is now an international manga award with over 1000 works per year.Therefore, I think that how to identify a truly talented writer is also a technique that editors should have.
